| Sure, I admit, I wanted to see it. Perfection. It's rare. But in a way, the shattered glass of imperfection handed to the Tom Brady and the New England Patriots last night by the New York Giants is a better story. Who would have bet against the Patriots (don't answer, I know there were some)? 18-0 versus the lowest seeded NFC team ever to be the big show? But there's a political story here too, with Super Tuesday only two days after this SuperBowl. The story is this - there's a reason they still play the game even when one side is heavily favored. Sure, the underdog occasionally wins - but its rare. But they get their chance, whether they pull it off or look miserable trying. And even the greatest upset can occur. Situations change on a dime. Luck transpires. Even the greatest make mistakes. What does that mean to politics? For the last year, people have been telling me that 2008 is going to be another landslide year for Democrats and Republicans will be crushed. I keep pointing out that George HW Bush had a 91% approval rating in 1991 and no one thought the Dems had a chance. Bill Clinton wandered along, the economy didn't even go into recession but just slowed its growth, and Bush Sr. made serious mistakes (read his lips). Even this year, Sen. Clinton has faltered and McCain used one of his nine lives before reaching his current favored status. And while it looks like McCain and Clinton at the moment, Romney and OBama still are on the field. Remember, whatever you think the odds are, that's why they still play the game. And if the game is close in the end, each little play makes a difference. |
