A story about a tax decrease. Hold the electrons. Get this, in Fruitport, MI, an effective suburb of Muskegon (if you could even say Muskegon has those), the city is reducing the millage rate for street light maintainence.
This is a story about someone not turning the lights off, but leaving them on ... but apparently efficiently (or maybe there's just less to keep lit nowadays?). Apparently, Fruitport's street light fund had an excess balance, so the city is reducing the tax rate. See the blurb here in the Muskegon Chronicle or below the fold for details, but I'll take it as good news on something.
Some Fruitport Township homeowners will see about a slight savings on their tax bills this year due to a reduced street light millage.
The operating millage will be lowered a tenth of a mill, down from 0.4 mills to 0.3 mills. For those owning a home valued at $100,000, it's about a $10 a year savings, said township Supervisor Ron Cooper.
Cooper said the township's street light fund currently has a balance of $321,313. The fund is designated to cover the cost of street light expenses only. The township anticipates spending about $131,000 on street lights this year, Cooper said.
Because the township board said the fund is large enough to cover future street light expenses, it voted unanimously last week to lower the millage.
