| OutsideLansing.com is happy to provide you with video of an hour and 8 minute speech and Q & A session with former state representative Leon Drolet (R-Macomb) and director of the Michigan Taxpayers Alliance (MTA). The video uses the google video service do to YouTube timelimits, and can be downloaded for personal use only to PSP/Ipod video formats.
Drolet's speech is humorous and uses excellent imagery. He does an excellent job of pointing out that MTA is no different than any other special interest, except that it represents previously disorganized taxpayers, and that whatever "fear" MTA inspires is just using the same technique that highly organized smaller special interests use behind the scenes or even overtly in other ways.
While I would pick small bones with his answer to my question on the nature of recalls and whether they are "personal" (he says they aren't personal, uses a great example of one of Andy Dillon's constituents saying exactly that to Dillon, but then admits he took Chris Ward's vote somewhat personally because they were close friends), overall, Leon brings an analysis to the issue that is quite persuasive.
And the speech is entertaining.
Recalls are not personal. They are part of the political process. They are a message from the people to their representatives on where the line is on what is important to them.
